CloudKid Presents Paper Idol - The Playground
The finale that is Paper Idol’s largest body of work to date is finally here, with the release of ‘The Playground.’ An energetic, emotional, fun and electric mix of nostalgia, growth, uncertainty, change and metamorphosis, his musical journey all about missing the purity of childhood tells all in the album’s final single of the same name.
He says, “‘The Playground‘ is about missing the purity of childhood. It’s so easy to get caught up in status, envy, competition, desire to compare yourself to others. But we often forget there was a time when we were just “being,” soaking up the world around us with no ego, no care in the world. My bandmate Adam and I tried so many different ideas for the chorus that didn’t work for this specific song. Then the idea of a vintage children’s choir came up – and it fit perfectly! I got in touch with The West Los Angeles Children’s Choir and they totally nailed it, which are the voices you hear on the song. This was during the pandemic, so we had zoom rehearsals and each child recorded their part at home. It was such a fun experience taking those recordings and fitting them into the record.”

Paper Idol is the genre-bending pop project of LA-based artist and auteur Matan KG. The music weaves dance music and indie-pop into “something unique and utterly disarming” (Beats per Minute), with storytelling that blurs the line between reality and fantasy, optimism and delusion, the sentimental and the absurd. After graduating university with a Neuroscience degree, Matan left medical-school ambitions behind to pursue music in LA. In under three years, he has released a string of singles and 2 EPs, multiple collaborations with forward-thinking dance artists (Yung Bae, Wankelmut, NASAYA), and has been lauded by BBC Radio 1, Billboard, Consequence, Under the Radar, and Dancing Astronaut. Featuring former classmate Adam Rochelle (keys), Paper Idol has performed the Fonda Theater, The Teragram Ballroom, and an official showcase at South By Southwest. He has also shared stages with Sylvan Esso, Two Feet, Lewis Del Mar, and Washed Out across festivals in the US over the past year. With his debut album, The Playground, out now under CloudKid, Paper Idol hopes to continue rallying a generation bombarded by reality and desperate for an escape.
