Inspirational, fun and full of hyper-pop sensibilities, the next chapter of updog’s new journey is as tell-all as it gets. ‘change in my pocket‘ provides a hyper-meta commentary on how the artist feels he’s changed and developed since moving, yet again to another country, of which has fuelled and added to his creativity and identity an an artist. In typical updog fashion, the song also includes the phonetic spelling of his artist name in its lyricism, something he’s notoriously played with before.
He says, ‘With this song, I talk about how I’m finally feeling comfortable enough to be genuine and not like I have to be someone or something else as an artist. I like having fun and not taking life too seriously, in my artistry and real life. I’m just really open to change. It’s funny because even though I might be getting older, I feel like I’m becoming more open to new experiences and ideas. I’ve definitely felt this excacerbated since moving to Berlin. What’s interesting about this track is that [my producer] Birk and I finished it in a single session — from production, writing, lyrics and vocal recording. We wanted to challenge ourselves to be fully done with the song within eight hours. Given the song is out for release, it’s safe to say we succeeded!”

Steadily walking down his brand new path, updog’s latest tackles how he’s been approaching such a road. The end of his previous EP marked the end of his “emo” era, that body of work full of songs that were introspective, self-deprecating and full of meta-level lyricism. However, as that EP progressed, listeners found themselves hearing less serious narratives, where the writing fluctuated instead to describe moments in real time, rather than at the meta, life level. This time around, with a new EP in the works, out for release late autumn/early winter, updog wants listeners to follow his life, through story and sound, as it is now, following some of his mundane moments, while making them into grandiose storytelling for the masses. Poetic, full of good vibes and music he says, is ‘simply to chill to,’ this new way forward for updog is more about paying homage to his own experiences and himself more than anything or anyone else.
